Crisis Talk. Humanitarian Crises: Roles, Responsibilities and Risks for Europe

Tilman Brück will give a keynote speech at a Crisis Talk on “Humanitarian Crises: Roles, Responsibilities and Risks for Europe”. The event will take place on 17 October 2017 at the Representation of the State of Hessen to the EU in Brussels.

Numerous humanitarian crises are currently unfolding. There are famines in Syria, Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and Nigeria and people are suffering from serious malnutrition. This leads to political instability with consequences for Europe. There are many reasons for these emergencies, ranging from a drop in living standards, poverty, climate change to wars. Meanwhile, however, funds for local development aid are being reduced. For instance, the United States is threatening drastic cuts to the international cooperation budget. In this Crisis Talk we will discuss the various reasons why people are fleeing to Europe: how can we close the growing development gap in a rapidly changing geopolitical situation? How can we effectively and fairly support peace and ensure political and economic stability?
Crises have historically been an important driver for change and progress in the EU. In crisis situations, the EU – which is characterised by a high level of heterogeneity and tends to form opinions by consensus – has so far generally been able to generate common perceptions, overcome blockages and manage integration. In the Crisis Talks series, the Leibniz Research Association “Crises in a globalised world” examines the question how Europe should deal with its current and past crises.
