Project Background
Polarization is a growing concern in Kyrgyzstan and may have significant implications for the country’s social cohesion and stability. While still a rare event, violent extremism has surfaced in Kyrgyzstan, and some Kyrgyz citizens have become actors of violence abroad. Thus, societal divisions and tensions are increasingly palpable and threaten the country’s stability and social fabric. Yet, to date, little is known about the prevalence, trends, drivers, and consequences of polarization and extremism at the individual level, and thus the potential for instability and violence in Kyrgyzstan.
Project Objectives
We will generate and share novel, micro-level insights into the extent, evolution, drivers, and implications of polarization and extremism in Kyrgyzstan. Based on the findings, we will derive entry points for policy and programming, seeking to strengthen social cohesion and prevent polarization, extremism, radicalization, and violence in Kyrgyzstan.
