Special Feature on trust and development in conflict-affected countries published in the Journal of Development Economics

Guest co-editors: Andrew Foster, Philip Verwimp, Patricia Justino and Tilman Brück

We are happy to announce that the Journal of Development Economics has just published a special feature on the topic of trust, development and conflict. While world events, on a daily basis, show us the saliency of this topic, few observers capture the depth of the issues as stake.

At the annual workshops of the Households in Conflict Network (www.hicn.org) there is time for in-depth discussion and reflection through the presentation of new research. The 2023 HiCN workshop held in Brussels focused on the specific conditions under which trust and violent conflict interact, offering new evidence as well as building blocks for future hypotheses and theorizing.

The special feature includes three of the most interesting and methodologically sound papers that were presented at the workshop. These papers investigate the repercussions of conflict on the capacity of societies to trust and to develop social capital.

Our introduction to the special feature, which is now available online at the journal web site, provides an overview of the field, spurring new research.
